Diversity In our baptismal vows, Episcopalians pledge “to respect the dignity of every human being” and “to seek and serve Christ in all persons”. Episcopalians have always had a strong sense of ministry to the world. At Advent, we participate in the Episcopal Habitat for Humanity Project, Episcopal City Mission (chaplaincy to youth in detention) and other outward-focused ministries. We do this not because it is a duty, but because we believe we encounter Christ in others. Because we seek to see Christ in others, we believe that we will have a clearer image of the great messianic banquet when the Body of Christ which gathers for our eucharistic meal on Sunday is as diverse as possible. Therefore, we strive to welcome all persons into our fellowship. After years as a comfortable suburban parish, Advent has begun to take seriously our Lord's call, not only to welcome all into our fellowship, but to invite all to the table. We seek to extend Christ's invitation to persons of all races, all backgrounds and all orientations, “from East and West, from North and South” to join the feast. |
